The University of Freiburg is inviting contributions to an upcoming edited volume titled “Environmental and Cultural Destruction at Imperial Margins.” This initiative follows the second annual conference of the Graduate School “Empires” at the University of Freiburg. The focus is on the intersection of environmental humanities, cultural studies, and the dynamics of borderlands, frontiers, and contact zones in (post)imperial contexts. It aims to explore the origins, mechanisms, and outcomes of destructive practices in these margins, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental and cultural destruction.
Contributions from a variety of disciplines are welcome, including environmental humanities, anthropology, memory studies, linguistics, religious studies, literary and film studies, post/de-colonial studies, feminist studies, animal studies, social and political sciences. We encourage interdisciplinary approaches that offer innovative insights into the complexities of imperial margins.
Submissions should focus on environmental and cultural destruction within Africa, the Americas, the Middle East, and the Arctic. Please submit a draft of approximately ten pages, an abstract of no more than 300 words, and a brief biographical note by 15 April 2024 to conference@grk2571.uni-freiburg.de.
The volume, to be published as an open-access publication with De Gruyter, aims for a collaborative and interdisciplinary discourse, culminating in a writing workshop for accepted contributions. Final chapters will undergo peer review, with publication planned following the review process.
